THEFT FROM SHOPS
Owner Attitude “Hardening” A distinct hardening in the attitude of Christchurch shopkeepers to shoplifters has been seen recently by the local crime-prevention officer (Detective Sergeant E. J. Stackhouse). “I have been invited to address businessmen’s organisations and the staffs of several department stores. They all agree that all shoplifters caught will be handed over to the police, whether they be self-confessed first offenders, juveniles, or in any other category,” Mr Stackhouse, said. In the first five months of this year, goods worth £3500 had been reported to the police as stolen from shops, he said.
“The shopkeepers are realising that in New Zealand shoplifting is a big business in crime. They know that one of the best ways of deterring potential shoplifters is to report any person caught to the police.” Mr Stackhouse, in addresses to shop staffs, has outlined methods of catching shoplifters and means by which it can be made much more difficult to steal goods.
