‘NEED FOR TROOPS’
East-of-Suez U.K. Policy
(NZ.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, June 16. The Prime Minister (Mr Wilson) yesterday told critics within his party that Britain must keep troops east of Suez to prevent the dangers of an "eyeball to eyeball" nuclear confrontation between the United States and China.
If Britain pulled out of this critical sphere, he said, Asia would be left to three main powers—China, the United States, and the Soviet Union. Australia and New Zealand would exert only a small influence on the edge of the area, with Japan “coming up fast on the rails.” Mr Wilson hammered home these key points at a meeting of Labour members of Parliament which crushed, by 225 votes to 54, a left and rightwing revolt against his East of Suez policies.
