Obituary COMMANDER H. A. HAYNES
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 13. Commander Herbert Albert Haynes, a former naval armament expert with 50 years’ service, has died in Auckland. He was 83. Born in Bristol, he entered the. Royal Navy in 1899 and served during the First World War. He was commissioned gunner in H.M.S. Diomede when the ship was on the New Zealand station in 1925. When he retired from the service two years later with the rank of lieutenant, he was appointed armament supply officer at Auckland. Commander Haynes’ first headquarters were at Fort Takapuna, but in 1937 the present naval armament depot was established at Kauri Point and he played a conspicuous part in its development. In 1941 Commander Haynes was promoted honorary lieu-tenant-commander, and in ; 1946 he became an honorary commander. He was awarded the 0.8. E. in 1940. Commander Haynes wag regarded as an expert in explosives and his advice was frequently sought in planning intricate schemes of demolition. When the Wanganella was stranded on Barrett's reef at the entrance to Wellington harbour, he co-operated in plans which were made to shift the ship by demolishing portions of the reef on which she lay.
