The Thai Prime Minister, Field Marshal Thannom Kittikachom, yesterday opened the New Zealand-Thai highway equipment centre at Mahasarakam, 250 miles north of Bangkok. New Zealand contributed road-building equipment and the services of 15 Army engineers to the project. The Prime Minister was welcomed by the New Zealand Ambassador, Sir Stephen Weir. At the opening ceremony the Prime Minister said that the centre would not only build roads but would also train Thai engineers in modem road-building techniques. The New Zealand Government contributed about £291,666 towards the centre.
