From Africa To Spain

An American swimming inside a 16ft by 12ft wire cage to protect him from sharks has made what is believed to be the first crossing from North Africa to the coast of Spain. But he gave up an attempt to go on to Gibraltar. D. Smith, of San Francisco, entered the water early on Sunday at Punta Cires, near Ceuta, Morocco. Seven and a half hours later he reached Punta Olivet ro, to the east of Tarifa, on the southernmost bulge of Spain’s coastline. Gibraltar lies roughly 15 miles further north-east Two British motor-launches accompanied Smith, who was fed three times during the ewim with soft drinks and syrup.
