MUSIC AND CHILDREN
Two Lectures Planned A well-known music educationist, Mr Ramsay Howie, is at present in Christchurch during the course of a New Zealand tour as national president of the New Zealand School Music Association. Mr Howie, who retired recently from the position of Senior lecturer in music at the Auckland Teachers’ College, is familiar to many through his work in the Broadcast to Schools radio programmes. His particular interest is in the field of musical creativity In children, and he will deliver two public lectures on this subject while in Christchurch The first lecture. “Original Music for Folk of Today.” has been arranged by the North j Canterbury Branch of the New Zealand School Music {Association and will be given iin the Secondary Students' Common Room of the Teachers’ College, Montreal street, at 8 this evening. Mr Howie’s second lecture, “Lost Legions of Music—the ‘Folk’; Recovery and Regeneration,” will include recorded and live musical illus- ■ trations and will be presented by the School of Music, University of Canterbury. It will be given in the University Hall, Worcester street, at 8 p.m. on Friday. Both lectures are open to the public, and admission is free.
