Kaitawa Fund More than £30,000 has been promised or given to the Kaitawa relief fund in Auckland. The Mayor of Auckland (Dr. R. G. McElroy) said the Union Steam Ship Company, owner of the Kaitawa, would give £3OOO as soon as a suitable trust fund was established. The manager of the company, Mr R. A. Johnson, has received gifts of about £3OO. These will be added to the fund.—(P.A.) Choice Welcomed “I hope he continues to get off his bike from time to time on public issues,” says the Rev. W. S. Dawson, minister of the Durham Street Methodist Church, in his church bulletin, welcoming the appointment of the Very Rev W. A. Pyatt as Bishop of. Christchurch. Dean Pyatt, he says, has a combination of candour, courage, and Christian charity which befits the Bishop of Christchurch. Light Frost The weather in Christchurch was fine yesterday after a three-degree frost at Harewood. At 6 a.m. the temperature at Harewood was 37 degrees, at 9 a.m. 32 degrees, and at noon 42 degrees. High cloud and light, variable winds kept the afternoon temperature at Harewood at a constant 47 degrees from 1 p.m. In the Botanic Gardens at 3 p.m. a temperature of 49 degrees was recorded. The temperature gauge on the Government Life building registered 48 degrees at 4.30 p.m. Skating Begins The skating season started at Lake Ida during the weekend and several Canterbury speed skaters trained over a 400-metre course in preparation for the Canterbury and New Zealand championships. The ice conditions were excellent on Saturday, but a thaw early on Sunday made the ice very wet. In mid-after-noon the temperature dropped, and the surface again became hard. Bucolic The pace of life in New Zealand was responsible for a lack of nervousness among children sitting music examinations, said Mr G. H. Heath-Gracie, music examiner for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, who is at present in Hamilton. “And I have a theory about this,” he said. “Your society is so founded on agriculture that you have more placid minds.”—(P.A.)
