Upsets In Bowls
(N.Z. Press Association) INVERCARGILL. There were a number of upsets in the singles section play of the New Zealand indoor bowls championships at Invercargill yesterday. A former winner, L. Bellis (Greymouth), faffed to qualify, as did Mrs R. Motion, of Wellington, who was run-ner-up in 1961. From an entry of 1275 players, 438 qualified. A. E. Williamson (Canterbury), runner-up in the singles in 1957, was an impressure qualifier, but E. F. Smith, also of Canterbury, was lucky to make post-sec-tion play with only five points. Smith has won two national titles In the pairs. A feature of the singles play was that three players from the Welfare club, in Auckland—S. E. N. Smith, Mrs K. Smith, and B. Pridham—all qualified with four wins. They are members of the winning North Island rink in Levin at Queen's Birthday week-end.
