‘IMMORAL NATION’
Journalist Attacks ILK. (N.Z.P.A ■KeufT—Conrioht) KKW YORK, June 12. A British journalist today described Britain “the most immoral nation in the West and said Britons had become “a socially irresponsible mass ... whoring after selfish and unsatisfying pleasures.” Writing in the “New York Times” magazine, Henry Fairlie referred to a recent article in “Time” magazine which described London as a “swinging” city. He said that not one of those who were supposed to have “switched on London” was connected in any way with the skills and industries on which Britain's prosperity must rest. “To learn slowly the skills of a great industry would be much too workaday for them,” he said. “There is decadence in all this, but also a precise corruption. . . . “Once and for all it needs to be said that the “exports” for which Britain is now becoming renowned are degrading. . . “Britain, at least in its public behaviour and public exhibitions, is now the most immoral country in Europe . . . and its people have become a socially irresponsible mass of unconnected individuals.”
