Fisheries Launch Not Fast Enough
(New Zealand Pre»« 4»»ociation) WELLINGTON, June 13. Delivery of the Marine Department’s new 55-foot fisheries patrol launch Ohorere—at present being fitted with a new engine at Auckland —has now been delayed for six months because the launch is not fast enough.
A Marine Department official said this morning the new engine was being fitted because the original “blew up” during a speed trial. The £51,000 vessel was launched by an Auckland boat-builder, Mr P. Vos, last November and was to have been delivered to the Marine Department by the beginning of the year. But the launch has been unable to reach more than 18 knots—two knots slower than the department wanted. “They tried to get the launch up to 20 knots but the engine virtually blew up. It developed a major fault," the official said. He believed the manufacturer was replacing the engine free of charge.
The department is considering invoking a penalty clause because of the delay in delivery.
