Magistrate’s Court FIVE THEFT AND FOUR OTHER CHARGES DENIED

Jack Neville Bateman Crawford, aged 43, a workman (Mr A. R. Cottrell), pleaded not guilty in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday to charges of unlawfully taking a motor-car at Auckland, driving while disqualified, and impersonating a police officer in Wellington, five charges of theft on the inter-island steamer Maori on April 12 of goods and money worth £97 16s. and a charge of attempted theft on April 12 of a handbag and its contents valued at £34.

After the hearing of prosecution evidence, Mr H. J. Evans, S.M., adjourned the hearing to June 7. Bail was renewed.

Ivor Rigby, chief steward of the Maori, and Brian Anthony Clair, the purser, said that Crawford approached them while Rigby was evicting a stowaway, and claimed to be a detective. Detective B. J. Preston said that when Crawford was arrested at Lyttelton he had £126 in his wallet. Crawford said he had no recollection of the previous night.

Constable J. J. O’Halloran said that 30 minutes after he took Crawford to the Lyttelton Police Station, Crawford, who had just awakened, said: "What am I doing here?” The witness said he replied that

a number of complaints had been received from women passengers on board the Maori. Crawford replied: “Interfere with women? Not me. A thief, yes.” ALLEGED RECEIVING Noel Tehau Wakefield, aged 30, a barman (Mr A. K. Archer), pleaded not guilty to three charges of receiving stolen goods from James Charles Doyle. Decision was reserved, and Wakefield was remanded to June 7 on bail. The goods involved are a portable television set valued at £lOO 9s 3d, two movie cameras valued at £24, and six transistor radios valued at £ll3 12s sd. Wakefield said that Doyle told him that all the articles were brought into the country duty free and assured him that they were not stolen.

The Court issued a warrant for the arrest of Gary Desmond Wheaton, who failed to appear on a charge of driving while disqualified on August 27, and a charge of obtaining a licence while disqualified from driving on the same date. ASSAULT CHARGE Malcolm Donald Hooper, aged 28, a workman, and Gavin Charles Hamilton, aged 27, a workman, denied a joint charge of assaulting Paul Raymond Taylor, aged 19, on May 21. The case was adjourned part-heard after a police witness, Patrick Dennis Sumner, had failed to appear. A warrant was issued for his arrest

Both accused were represented by Mr M. G. L. Loughnan.

Taylor said he was working at the Railway Cafe in Manchester street. The accused called him names, and he notified the manager. When he went outside the cafe, someone yelled, “Let’s get him,” and the accused assaulted him. Then the police arrived.

To counsel, the witness denied he was under the influence of alcohol or that he used an obscenity to other customers.

The hearing was adjourned to June 7, the accused being allowed bail.
