ROMAN CONSUL FIT FOR WANGANUI LEG

“The Press’’ Special Service PALMERSTON NORTH.

Doubts concerning a Wanganui start for Roman Consul today were cleared up yesterday when his trainer, H. J. Waller, pronounced the gelding completely fit for the Sir Thomas Duncan Challenge Cup Handicap, first leg of the double.

Roman Consul, winner of the New Zealand Derby and three open handicaps as well, will be a leading contender, but he faces a stiff test to prevent Dhuran winning his sixth race on the Wanganui track.

Dhuran has come through the final stages of his preparation in great style and there is confidence in his ability to run out the winner. His jockey, R. A. Jenkins, believes that Wanganui’s footing, likely to be quite firm for this time of the year, will suit him. Good final work has brought Chatty Lady closer to outright favour, while Acls and Re-echo are others to win friends by solid training. Advocacy is re ported completely fit and in dangerous form, so indications are the first leg of the main double will provide an interesting contest.

Whittle remains an outstand ing fancy for the P. A. O’Neill Handicap, the second leg. Few forsee her winning sequence coming to an end just yet. She has won her last six races tn a row, the most recent being an open sprint at Trentham. W. D. Skelton, who returned from a brief trip to Auckland yesterday, will ride Lisa In the first leg and Hooplah in the second. Both should race well, especially Hooplah. which Skelton expects to make the better showing.

The weather In the Manawatu and Wanganui districts is fairly settled and indications are that conditions could be abnormally good for this time of the year.
