RACING Chimaera Favoured At Wingatui

If last-start form is any guide, Chimaera should have a strong winning chance in the St. Clair Hack Handicap at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting at Wingatui today.

After a patch of indifferent form, Chimaera struck a heavy track at Winton last month and scored a 10-length win over Golden Web over a mile and a quarter.

is Lord Fair, which returns to jumping after a spell of flat racing. He showed excellent form as a hurdler and could prove a little too good for his opposition. Fields:— 11.15 a.m.— TRIAL STAKES NO. 1. £250; 6f.—Blue Stephan (1). Chow Maine (9), Decimal Coin (10). Don Cortauld (15), Flowing Gold (5). High Silver (8). Jaykay (4). An extra furlong is unlikely to trouble the Cassock gelding today as the track should again be heavy. Blue Amber and Hawkins may be the best of Chimaera’s rivals. Blue Amber has not raced since being unplaced at the Riverton meeting over Easter but his form before that suggested a liking for winter footing. Hawkins won the Waitaki Gold Cup over a mile and five furlongs at Waimate at his last start and on that run must be considered.

Proud Boy and Golden Web also have some form credentials, but going on Chimaera’s Winton win. Golden Web would have to improve vastly to upset Chimaera. The St. Clare Handicap is the second leg of the oncourse double. The first leg is on the First Trial Stakes, in which Decimal Coin could improve on a narrow second placing at Winton at his last start. The consistent Don Cortauld and Nelhaven also warrant support. The T.A.B. double is on the Birthday Handicap and the Winter Handicap. Bastille, which is unbeaten in open class, and Kumai, one of the best winter gallopers in recent years, dispute favouritism for the first leg, while the two Riccarton entrants, Tumble and Sabell, look the best prospects in the second leg.
