TROTTING HOLY HAL AND TRYOUT

Victories Likely At Ashburton Today

It is generally expected that Southland trainers will harness Holy Hal and Tryout to win the two major races at the Ashburton Trotting Cub’s winter meeting today.

Holy Hal, a member of D. Todd’s Mataura stable, is the ruling favourite for the £2OOO Sapling Stakes, the Dominion’s richest race for two-year-old pacers.

Tryout which is prepared by L. F. Norman, at Gore, will be one of the strong fancies for the £BOO Nicoll Handicap, first leg of the T.A.B. double.

If Holy Hal earns Sapling Stakes honours he will have come through his first season with an unbeaten record. Today Messrs J. R. Rogers and D. Keenan’s Hal Tryax youngster will be trying to bring his winning sequence to five. Although none of the others can compare with Holy Hal as far as records go, there are still a number of well-performed youngsters among his rivals. The records of Montage and Semloh have been marked by consistency. They should both be among the stronger fancies. The same applies to Dacron, a last-start winner at Addington. The Prebbleton stablemates, Authentic and Pro Consul, will also have their share of supporters. Tryout, which will be trying for his fourth win from his last six starts for Mr G. Youngson, is almost certain to be the Nicoll Handicap favourite.

Tryout will start from the limit in this race for 2min 16sec class pacers. On recent performances Our Smokey should be the best of his rivals off the same mark but it is generally expected' that most opposition for him will come from among the handicapped horses. The much improved Admire, winner of three of his last four races, and the laststart winner Allakasam might be the hardest to beat although both will be giving Tryout a start of 36 yards. The second leg of the main double will be run on the Harvest Handicap in which Lauder Way, Vantage and Local Star are a fancied trio. There will be a double for course patrons only on the First and Second Tinwald Handicap. Surrey Hills and Newport Maid might be the successful combination. The forecast is for a southerly change, with colder temperatures. But unless there is rain the track should be in good winter order.
