Rare Native Crow Seen
(N.Z. Press Association)
NELSON, June 3.
Mr J. L. Kendrick, visual aids officer of the Wildlife Service. Department of Internal Affairs, flew into Nelson today to substantiate, if he can, a reported sighting in the Bryant range of the rare orange wattled crow, or South Island kokako, which has not been seen for about 15 years. The last authoritative report came from the Lake Manapouri district in the early 1950’5.
“We know very little about the bird. There are only three descriptions of it in the writings of early ornithologists and they are limited,” Mr Kendrick said.
