RELIEF FOR FARMERS
North Otago Drought
(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, June 3. The Government has approved relief measures for farmers affected by drought in the North Otago area. The measures, which were recommended by the Drought Relief Committee, are:— Refund of hay cartage up to £5 a ton on hay which the committee is satisfied has been taken to the area because of the emergency conditions caused by the drought. A refund of freight charges for livestock removed from the drought area for grazing elsewhere, the concession to be limited to the homeward journey for a maximum of 100 miles. The Government has also approved guarantees for bank overdrafts to farmers whose rehabilitation after the drought cannot be financed from their own resources, normal sources of credit, or the Marginal Lands Board. The Minister of Agriculture (Mr Taiboys) said the Government would consider extending the relief if necessary.
