Minesweepers Next?
(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, June 3.
After the Royal New Zealand Navy has ordered its next frigate replacement, in the service is likely to be concentrated on smaller, less costly vessels capable of the dual roles of mine detection and fisheries patrol. New Zealand has shown interest in craft being developed as minesweepers for the Royal Nkvy.
Hostile submarines could quickly lay minefields which would be beyond the capacity of the Navy’s two vintage minesweepers Inverell and Kiama, which New Zealand received second-hand from Australia 15 years ago. A brief reference to new minesweeping vessels was made in the White Paper on defence.
