GOING TO VIETNAM TO SING
(Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A.) SYDNEY, June 3. A 20-year-old New Zealand pop singer, Dinah Lee, is going to South Vietnam this month to entertain New Zealand troops there.
She is believed to be the first New Zealand entertainer to visit the country.
During a two-week tour of South-east Asia she wilt also sing for New Zealand, Australian, American and British troops in Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and Borneo. Dinah said today: “I must confess I’m a little bit worried, but I wanted to do this very much. My brother is in
the Army so I know how the boys feel. I thought it was time a New Zealander went up there to entertain them. “So far, the New Zealanders have not known the Australian entertainers who have visited them, and I thought they would like to see someone from home.”
The tour is being arranged by the Australian Overseas Forces Fund, which has so far sent 33 Australian entertainers to South-east Asia. All the entertainers give their services voluntarily. While in Vietnam, Miss Lee will travel to camps in outlying areas by helicopter and truck. She will have a bodyguard while in the country.
