Father, Child Killed In Collision
Two of a family of five were killed and two injured, one seriously, in a collision
between two trucks at Lincoln yesterday
morning.
Those killed were
Richard John Robert Mugford, aged 28, a contractor, of Greenpark; and Margaret Patricia Mugford, aged two, his daughter.
Margaret May Ethel Mugford, aged 27, wife of the dead man, suffered severe head injuries. She was admitted to the Christchurch Hospital, where her condition last evening was reported to be fairly satisfactory. Denis Carl Mugford, aged three, was also admitted to the hospital. His condition last evening was reported to be satisfactory. The other member of the family, Robert John Mugford, aged six, was at school when the accident happened. The collision, at the corner of Ellesmere Junction road and Springs road, outside Lincoln College, occurred at 9.35 a.m.
Mr and Mrs Mugford and the children were in a pick-up truck. The other vehicle, driven by Brian Leslie Preen, of 8 Trina place, Christchurch, was an articulated truck laden with shingle. Mr Preen was not hurt. Mr Mugford and his daugh-
ter were thrown from their truck, which was severely damaged from the cab forward.
The articulated truck, slightly damaged. slewed across the road and stopped with its rear wheels in a ditch. A Post Office faultsman. Mr N. Sole, first on the scene, called an ambulance and police by radio telephone. He gave what assistance he could with a first-aid kit until a doctor arrived.
