Bible Lessons In Schools

Sir, —Parents, whether holding rationalist opinions or not, are sometimes hard to understand. Of all the aspects of primary education that merit criticism, critics in the present correspondence have chosen to complain about what is probably the least objectionable feature of the routine of these schools. Surely at a time when the amount of bad behaviour among young children drives many parents and teachers almost frantic with anxiety and often disrupts the work of classes for hours in each week, anything at all that gives pupils a glimpse- of a mode of conduct that could help them to live calmer and more disciplined lives, whether as Buddhists, Christians, or atheists should be welcomed. And further, if your correspondents are worried about the influence of religion why don’t they shoot at the bulkier targets of State secondary schools which often have religious exercises, or the universities, which appear to have chaplains on their staffs?—Yours, etc., J. F. WILLIAMS. June 3, 1966.
