Lakes Outlet
Sir—For over 90 years local bodies contiguous to lakes Forsyth and Ellesmere have debated and shelved schemes for a permanent outlet. Such shooters, commercial fishermen, and local farmers all have diverse ideas of what should be done. The lakes are Crown property, and are administered by the Marine Department. The potential increased production was estimated at £250 thousand in 1956; it could well be double that figure on today’s produce prices. Procrastination by past Governments has left this land drainage work in perpetual abeyance. I suggest that the two lakes be joined by a canal and an outlet be constructed against the cliffs at Poranui. A one-man
report is the answer to all the tripe usually associated with commissions. Who better qualified than Mr P. L. Laing, Commissioner of Works? Yours etc AUDI ALTERAM PARTNER. June 3, 1966.
