STUBBORNNESS AT SIXTEENTH
Ripley probably has yet to hear of this one, but he would be certain to welcome it in his collection.
Mrs Freda Findlay, of Cleveland, Ohio, met her daughter, Mrs Mary-anne Moore, in the championship final of their golf club on three separate occasions. Each time Mrs Findlay won by a hole through her daughter’s determination to play the sixteenth her own way.
“It was just plain Irish stubbornness on Mary-anne's part,” said Mrs Findlay on a visit to Christchurch last week.
“Each time we stood on the sixteenth tee she would take out her four wood and try to carry the creek at the bottom of a long, rolling slope. And each time her ball finished in the creek. “I would play an iron quietly out to the left for
position, then continue on to the green for a par. Each time I would win that hole to be one up. Then we would halve the seventeenth and eighteenth and I would take the match, one up. “In vain I would say to her, 'Mary-anne, play an iron this time.’ She would take no notice. She was determined to carry that creek. “Each time we got back to the clubhouse the club professional would say to her, 'Mary-anne, what club did you use off the sixteenth tee?’ And he would shake his head sadly at her reply.” Mrs Moore, however, went on to win II titles during her golfing career. And in her most important championship final it was a booming four wood shot which paved tht way for a brilliant eagle and an exciting victory at the eighteenth hole.
