VACANCIES—MALES NEW ZEALAND ANTARCTIC RESEARCH PROGRAMME 1966/67 VACANCIES TWELVE MONTHS IN ANTARCTICA VACANCY No. 1916 Senior Scientist Salary: Up to £1735. Appointee is required for Scott Base. Scientific programme primarily covers Upper Atmosphere Physics, Geomagnetism, Seismology, lonospherics, Gravity and Meteorology. VACANCY No. 1918. Scientific Officers Salary: Up to £1625. Appointees required for Scott Base. Specific duties would be allocated one or other of the scientific disciplines. Some data reduction and analysis work is involved. VACANCY No. 1919 Senior Technical Officer Salary: Up to £1625. Appointee is required for Scott Base. Scientific programme primarily covers Upper Atmosphere Physics, Geomagnetism, Seismology, lonospherics Gravity and Meteorology VACANCY No. 1920 Technicians, Scott Base Salary: Up to £l2lO. Electronics operation and maintenance experience is desirable. VACANCY No. 1921. Base Engineer, Scott Base Salary: £1420. Duties include the operation, servicing and repair of high speed diesel generators up to 75 KVA, tractors and motor vehicles, oil-fired heating systems and supervision of the mechanical and electrical fitters. Marine engineering experience and qualifications an advantage. VACANCY No. 1922. Fitter-Mechanic, Scott Base Salary: £llO5. Appointee will assist the Base Engineer in the operation, servicing and repair of high speed diesel generators, tractors and motor vehicles, oil-fired heating systems, etc. Ability to carry out gas and electric welding and use a lathe is essential. VACANCY No. 1923. Fitter-Electrician, Scott Base Salary: £llO5 Appointee will be a Registered Electrician and he will be responsible to the Base Engineer for the maintenance of all electrical services which include generators, heating control systems, fire alarms and auto-electrical equipment. VACANCY No. 1924. Radio Officer, Scott Base Salary: £l2lO. Appointee should hold First class P.M.G. Certificate and have had recant operating and maintenance experience on radio-telephone communications and C/W and S.S.B. transmitters. VACANCY No. 1925. Cook, Scott Base Salary: £l2lO Applicants with a Board of Trade Certificate or equivalent preferred, with recent experience in all phases of cooking and baking. SUMMER SUPPORT STAFF VACANCY No 1926. Deputy Leader Salary: £1420. Appointee will be required to assist in the implementation of the base and field programmes. Experience in snow and ice techniques desirable. VACANY No. 1927. Storekeeper Salary: £lOl4. Appointee should have a good knowledge of stores handling, documentation, layout and control. VACANCY No. 1928. Assistance Maintenance Officers (2) Salary: £972. Appointees should possess aptitude for painting, bulldozing, mechanical, cooking. VACANCY No. 1929. PRO/Photographer Salary: £llO5. The appointee will be responsible for the preparation of news and feature releases. Reporting experience is necessary. As photographer, he will provide photographic coverage for Antarctic activities VACANCY No. 1930. Maintenance Officer/Carpenter Salary: £992. Appointee should have had experience in all phases of building maintenance and renovations, including joinery. A trade apprenticeship is essential. VACANCY No. 1931. Surveyors or Assistant Surveyors Salary: up to £llO5. Qualified Surveyors preferred but applicant with experience in topographic mapping, triangulation and position fixing will be considered Alpine experience is a necessity. VACANCY No. 1932. Geologists Salary: up to £1625. The appointees will carry out detail geology involving stratigraphy, palaeontology and some palaeobotany to elucidate anomalies arising from reconnaissance surveys. Applicants should preferably possess a Masters Degree, and have had experience in one or more fields. Previous Antarctic experience would be an advantage. VACANCY No. 1933. Field Leaders (2) Salary: £1065. VACANCY No. 1934. Field Assistants (5) Salary: £BB5. Applicants will assist in field geological and survey parties or form part of base working parties. Applicants must have experience in snow and ice techniques, with search and rescue experience in alpine areas. Of the seven Field Leaders and Assistants two will be selected during the summer to winter over. GENERAL (1) All applicants are to state fully qualifications and experience for the position applied for. (2) Selected applicants are required to undergo a medical examination prior to appointment. (3) An Antarctic Allowance payable in addition to salary is as follows: Married Men Single Men Wintering over £5OO a year £275 a year Summer £350 a year £2OC a year (4) Appointee will be quartered, fed, and outfitted with essential cold weather clothing and special Antarctic clothing. (5) Special training courses are arranged for appointees prior to leaving New Zealand.
