Staff members of Lane Walker Rudkin had contributed £2769 Is 5d to the Save the Children Fund during the last two years, the president (Miss M. G. Havelaar) told members of the North Canterbury branch yesterday. The firm also had aroused interest and support from other firms and factories in Christchurch. Miss Havelaar said she had received a letter from a group of staff members who felt that the child whom they sponsored in Korea was not being properly cared for, and they
asked her to write to Korea to discover if they should send more money. Proceeds from a fashion parade in a city store in October would be given to the fund, said Miss Havelaar. A recent anonymous gift of £5OO would be sent to the headquarters in Korea. The fund now had a team of helpers in Vietnam, said Miss Havelaar. A convalescent rest centre would be established for child war victims who needed medical care before they returned to their homes or to refugee camps. The team would also establish a training centre where war widows would be taught knitting and other handcrafts. Cretan children needed help and the fund worker in Crete reported that they would appreciate new sponsorships, said Miss Havelaar.
A centre for child poliomyelitis victims in Hong Kong supported by the branch reported that it had been able to discharge two children since the centre opened on March 17. Both were unable to walk when admitted.
