Unbeaten Soccer Clubs To Meet
The “giant-killer” of this year’s Chatham Cup competition, New Brighton, has drawn last season’s Canterbury champion, Christchurch City, as its semi-final opponent.
The other tie will be between Waterside, which caused another upset in the second round last Saturday, and Western. Both matches will be played at English Park on June 11.
The draw was made after the second round matches last Saturday. So far this season Brighton, the unbeaten second division leader, has eliminated two first division clubs in the competition Shirley-No-
mads and Technical Old Boys, both by the same overwhelming margin, 5-1. Waterside disposed of a second division club. University, in the first round and then last Saturday caused a big surprise by beating High .School Old Boys, 2-1. Two "Own Goals” Both Brighton and City have 100 per cent records in their league competitions. Although they have not met this year, they fought one of the tightest matches of last season when City narrowly won, 2-1. But the ironical part of this match was that Brighton scored all three goals—its defenders put two through their own goal. Waterside, which was promoted to the first division this season in place of the relegated Brighton, was knocked out of the Chatham Cup last year by Western after having beaten Technical in the first round. When the two clubs met in the Hurley Shield competition earlier this . month Western was a convincing winner, 6-0. In the first round of this season’s Chatham Cup, City accounted for Rangers, 5-0. and Western beat Northern Hearts (Timaru), 12-2. They had byes into the semi-finals. Sectional Final The final of the Canterbury section of the Chatham Cup will be played on June 25. The winner will play either the Marlborough or Nelson finalists, who will meet their sectional final on July 9. The Otago and Southland sectional final will be played on the same day, and the South Island final will be on August 13 at either Christchurch, Nelson or Blenheim. The North Island final will be played in the Auckland province the following Saturday and the national final will be decided at the Basin Reserve, Wellington, on September 3.
