Canterbury (captain), I. S. T. Smith, North Otago (vicecaptain). Trial Game Important

The first preparation for Canterbury’s major Rugby matches this season—the game against the Lions and the Ranfurly Shield challenge against Auckland—will begin at Rugby Park today with a Canterbury trial. The selectors, Messrs R. H. Duff and G. T. Nolan have not brought many new players forward but to them it will be just as important to have confirmation that last season’s leading players are in good form.

Mr Nolan’s experiment of playing B. A. Watt at second five-eighths and T. L. Mehrtens at first five-eighths will be watched closely, for the lack of an experienced and capable second five-eighths seems the main weakness in the possible Canterbury backline.
