COLERIDGE RESCUE

Skin-Diver In Difficulties

A skin-diver engaged in fisheries research at Lake Coleridge yesterday afternoon suffered chest injuries while working under water, and had to be rushed to the Christchurch Hospital. He is Roger Goode, of 43 Normans road. Mr Goode and Mr M. Flain, of the fisheries section of the Marine Department, arrived at the top end of the lake about midday. After telling a local resident of their plans they began diving in between 30ft and 50ft of water near the northern end of the Harper river diversion. Mr Goode got into difficulties and lost his head gear, including his mouth piece. Mr Flain dived to Mr Goode’s assistance, brought him to the surface, and applied mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

About 2 p.m. the two men arrived at the home of Mr and Mrs E. Porter, about a mile and a half from the mouth of the diversion. On his arrival Mr Goode was able to walk with assistance, but his condition deteriorated. A doctor was called, and an ambulance left Christchurch for the Harper river at 4.5 p.m. It picked up Mr Goode and left on the return trip about 7.5 p.m. Mr Goode’s condition last night was fair.
