RICE BOWL APPEAL
Aid For 100,000 Children
The annual Rice Bowl appeal made by the North Canterbury branch of the Save the. Children Fund will be held from May 27 to June 3 this year. The proceeds will help support projects to assist 100,000 children in 26 countries, said the chairman of the appeal committee (Mr E. E. Booth).
Last year £4lOO was given to the fund in Canterbury. From the total of more than £33,000 given to the fund in New Zealand last year, £14,950 has been allocated to 29 projects in Korea, £lOOO for meals for children in a Hong Kong nursery, £4OO each to Moroccan home for orphaned and handicapped, and child welfare clinics in the Congo; £3OO each to village self help schemes for the very poor in Southern Italy and drugs for the children’s wing of a Government hospital in Jordan; £4OOO on milk powder and vitamins for sending to Korea and Jordan; and £4OOO for a London-based emergency fund.
In its work the Save the Children Fund aims to cooperate with local government schemes and other voluntary local and outside organisations, including Freedom From Hunger projects, medical, vocational guidance, feeding and clothing centres: nurseries and residential homes. While supplying staff initially, it seeks to engage local professional workers.
