THREE DAYS’ VISIT BY ROADS BOARD
The recently-fixed line of the southern motorway, proposals for the northern outlet, and plans for widening Fendalton road will be considered by the National Roads Board when it visits the Christchurch area for three days next week.
Members will arrive by air from Wellington on Wednesday morning, May 25, and will end the visit on Friday afternoon. The chairman, the Minister of Works (Mr Allen) will not be able to make the trip. Local problems will be discussed with county councils, and the board and its No. 14 District Roads Council will meet on Thursday night. After arriving at Christchurch Airport, the party will leave for Darfield by way of Lincoln, Leeston, the Rakaia bridge on the Main South road and Norwood and go on in the afternoon to Homebush and the Rakaia Gorge bridge, returning to Christchurch by way of Lake Coleridge, Lake Lyndon, and Porter’s Pass.
On Thursday morning, the board will go to Akaroa by way of the Tunnel road, Diamond Harbour, Port Levy, and Pigeon Bay, with a detour to inspect the steep Jubilee road on the west side of Akaroa Harbour. In the afternoon, the party will travel over steep, winding roads on Kinloch and discuss the problems of the area with the Wairewa County Council. In the afternoon, the party will inspect the avenues surrounding the Christchurch city centre and will travel along Fendalton road for an explanation of plans to widen it from Harper avenue to Clyde road. On Friday the board will
head south through Templeton along the line of the southern motorway, and inspect the northern motorway after travelling by way of Cranford street and the Main North road.
Oxford will be visited by way of Tram road and South Eyre road, and if time permits in the afternoon the board will inspect the proposed Glen Tui deviation and go on to Amberley before returning to the airport.
