Prices Down At Dunedin Sale

(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, May 16. From the growers’ point of view, the eighth and final wool sale of the Dunedin season today was a disappointing one. Prices for the medium to coarse crossbreds, which made up the bulk of the offering of 18,520 bales, were slightly down on those obtained at Invercargill.

Second shear wools were also slightly cheaper but the Merino and half-bred available sold slightly better than at Christchurch on April 27. Fewer buyers than usual were present and most of the wool was bought by European firms. Passings were frequent, although most lots were quiet later, and the wool commission bid for poorer lines. The official report issued by the Dunedin Wool-Brokers' Association, the New Zealand Woolbuyers’ Association and the New Zealand Wool Commission is: “The eighth and final Dunedin wool sale was held today in the wool exchange when 18,500 bales were offered to a representative bench of buyers. “The selection was a varied one and typical of an end of season sale. Second shear and lambs fleece provided a fair proportion of the offering, with crossbred fleece and oddments making up most of the balance, there being only a very limited number of fine wools catalogued. “Apart from a few choice lots of second shear and lambs fleece the bulk of the selection in these descriptions was a little disappointing. “As compared with the last representative offering of fine wools at Christchurch on April 27, Merinos and halfbreds are quoted as being in sellers’ favour. “Compared with the Invercargill sale, medium to coarse crossbred prices overall were a little easier. Realisations for second shear wools slightly favoured buyers. “Lambs fleece was In sellers’ favour with skirtings generally unchanged. “Although competition was fairly widespread, the Continent lifted the weight of the offering.” The prompt date is June 3.
