TROTTING Few Horses Without Form Will Get Classic Start

Only three horses which have not yet finished in a place in their races are certain to secure a start in the £2OOO New Zealand Sapling Stakes, to be run on the first day of the Ashburton Trotting Club’s winter meeting on Saturday, June. 4.

The club was left with a field of 36 when final forfeits were made last week, but five of those horses have not been named and probably have been left in the field in error.

The club will start 18 horses in the 12-furlong clas' sic, with an additional four runners to be given the right of re-entry on general withdrawal day on May 30. The 36 horses include seven which have won races, and all are assured of a start Of the rest eight have finished second, third or fourth in at least one of their races and probably will receive a start.

Several horses without form have been entered for the Two-year-old Stakes, a race for nan-winners, at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s winter meeting at Addington Raceway on Saturday week. Placings in that race could qualify them for a start at Ashburton. The Ashburton club was criticised last year when for the first time it selected and balloted in the Sapling Stakes. As well, the right of re-entry applied for four horses. However, much of the criticism was squashed when Atanui, one of those horses to survive the ballot, finished third to Phillmark and Roydon Prince. Atanui had had very few starts at trials and had not started at a totallsator meeting.

In spite of that, many claimed some system of trials would be fairer than a ballot. It was suggested that a trial should be held on the day of withdrawals. That, too, could react adversely for some owners as a bad run-in the trial could result in a horse not obtaining a start.

The 18 horses to face the starter in the big race on June 4 will be a particularly strong and even field. Long Spell The promising four-year-old trotter. Rannach Lad, will not race for some time. He pulled a muscle in his back recently and a spell of some months has been recommended to his part-owner and trainer, N. F. White. Rannach Lad won four races this season and showed himself one of the best young trotters seen for some time. Bruised The Belfast trainer, J. G. Hampton, escaped with a bruising when he was tossed over the rail near the two furlongs in the North Otago Pace on Saturday at Oamaru. At first it was thought that Hampton might have injured his back and legs, but X-ray examinations failed to confirm this. Hampton hopes to drive again at the Timaru meeting on Saturday. Sound Run Merry Morning’s third to Doug’s Choice and Battlefield in the North Otago Pace on Saturday was a smart effort as he had missed much work after being injured in a race at Addington Raceway on April 2. Merry Morning is one of a strong team being prepared for winter meetings by the Gore trainer, L. F. Norman. Merry Morning probably will race next in the May Stakes at the Canterbury Partk winter meeting on Saturday week. Two Wins The South Island team at Auckland did not fare as well

as expected and finished the night with only two wins on Saturday. Ulove won the Ranui Handicap and Towser the Oratia Handicap. Medico, Disband and Town Martial recorded placings. Some of the southern horses arrived in Auckland only a few hours before they raced and this could have affected their performances. Some could do better on the second night of the meeting on Saturday. Put Aside Stewart Hanover, a winner over 12 furlongs at Hutt Park Raceway last month, has been put aside for a let-up. He will be brought back into work in time to prepare him for rich classic races in the spring, including the New Zealand Derby Stakes in November. Stewart Hanover, by Garrison Hanover from Lauder Hall, is a particularly fine type of pacer. It is unfortunate that he was not entered for the New Zealand Sapling Stakes. He is bred to be a good winter performer and his dam had few peers on soft tracks. Amateur No Reply, surprise winner of the May Handicap at Alexandra Park Raceway last Saturday, is trained at Hanurewa by his part-owner, L. A. W. Kent, who for 10 years from 1942 was the Auckland representative

Auckland (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. The T.A.B. double at the Auckland Trotting Club's second night meeting on Saturday will be on the Patrons’ and Helensville Handicaps and the on-course double on the Rodney and Puhoi Handicaps. wicket-keeper. Last year Kent was told that No Reply was not worth persevering with. However, he was so convinced that the horse was not “finished” that he took out an amateur trainer’s licence and trained No Reply himself. He has been training him for about seven months. During that time No Reply has had nine starts for two wins, a second and two fourths, all at Alexandra Park. Promising Sidi Barrani was having only her third start when she finished a good third behind Rough Sea and Unique Song in the Donaldson Handicap at Oamaru on Saturday. Trained at Tinwald by H. S. Donaldson, who races her in partnership with her breeder, Mr J. D. Clark, Sidi Barrani is a four-year-old by Court Martial from Seepage, the dam also of Lady Attack, Kennoway and Macnamara. She looks as if she eventually will be a worth-while winner. Her placing was in a small way compensation for Donaldson, who had to scratch the promising Stormy Petrel from the R. A. McDowell Handicap. Stormy Petrel was suffering from a slight cold.
