Pickets Planned For U.S. Ships
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 16. Pickets are being organised by the Peace for Vietnam Committee in Auckland to lead demonstrations when two United States warships visit the city to commemorate the Battle of the Coral Sea between May 18 and 22.
A spokesman for the organisation, which decries United States and New Zealand in-
:ervention in Vietnam, said oday that picket party plans lad been in hand “for a long dme.” The organisation wanted to make the strongest possible protest against United States aggression in Vietnam while the two ships were berthed in Auckland. The guided missile destroyer, Berkeley, will arrive in Auckland from Hobart about noon on Thursday. The seaplane tender. Pine Island, will arrive from Melbourne about noon on Wednesday. Spokesmen would not give details of the picketing arrangements, but it is thought that a picket is also being arranged to confront the leading United States representative for the commemoration, Vice-Admiral P. H. Ramsey. A spokesman for the visiting United States representatives said they were “quite prepared” for demonstrations.
