Fewer Decrees Absolute
For the second year in succession decrees absolute granted have shown a de crease, says the Government Statistician (Mr J. V. T. Baker) in the latest abstract of statistics. Decrees absolute granted in 1965 numbered 1814, compared with 1894 in 1964, and 1905 in 1963. The number of decrees absolute granted for 10,000 of the mean population was 6.85 in 1965, 7.29 in 1964, and 7.49 in 1963. Petitions for divorce filed have shown an increase for the second time since 1961 being 2440 for 1965, 2234 for 1964, and 2138 for 1963. Separation agreement is still the principal ground for granting of decrees absolute and applied to 794 cases in 1965, compared with 806 in 1964. Adultery is the ground showing the largest percentage increase since 1955, with a rise over this period from 351 to 490, or 48 per cent. By comparison, grounds of separation agreement have risen from 771 to 856, or by 11 per cent, over the same period.
