RAIN KEEPS TAXIS BUSY
Heavy rain about 5.50 p.m yesterday caught Christchurch pedestrians unawares, and kept taxis busy for the next two hours.
When telephoned at 7.30 p.m. , both taxi companies were still returning the “engaged” signal. “We were flat out from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.,” said one company’s telephone operator later. “Just about the whole fleet was out.”
With many persons going to see shows in Christchurch, it would have been a busy evening anyway, he said, but the rain had made it “screamingly busy.”
The other taxi company also reported a keen demand for cars, about 90 per cent of the fleet being used.
