HEAD OF TITUS

Return To Crete (N.Z PA.-Reuter—Copyright) HERACLION (Crete), May 16. One of Christendom’s most precious relics, the head of Titus, secretary to St. Paul and the first Bishop of Crete, was returned yesterday after an absence of three centuries. It was sent back by Giovanni Cardinal Urbani, Roman Catholic Patriarch of Venice, in a goodwill gesture to the Greek Orthodox Church. The head of the apostle was taken from Crete in 1669 by Venetian officials to prevent it falling into the hands of invading Turks. It had been kept in Venice until a few days ago when Pope Paul decided to send it back.
