BRICKLAYERS’ PAY RISE
18s 6d A Week, More Allowances (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 15. Bricklayers— except those in the Northern industrial district—will receive increases in minimum award wages under an award made in the Arbitration Court this week. During their first week of work bricklayers have gained an increase of 5J per cent and an extra 18s 6d after that. Workers in charge of two or more workmen will be paid another 6s per day. Workers using acid, and artificial manure will be provided with overalls, gloves and gain an extra 6|d an hour.
For laying concrete blocks over 351 b a worker will receive an additional 4d an hour and an extra lOd for laying blocks over 431 b. Employers are forbidden to sub-let any work within scope of the award on a labour only or piecework basis. Employees are forbidden to take on such work.
A new clause gives workers on multi-storey buildings working more than four storeys- away from workers’ sheds and where no lift is available, an extra 3d an hour.
Sugar Talks.—World sugar exporters met in London last week for discussions on how to raise prices which have been declining for months.— London, May 15.
