BULK WHEAT HANDLING
“Farm Storage
A decision to harvest wheat in bulk must be accompanied by a decision to provide bulk storage on the fam, said the general manager of the Wheat Board (Mr L. C. Dunshea). He was speaking at the conference of the agriculture section of North Canterbury Federated Farmers, when delegates were considering a Springston remit seeking faster receipt of bulk wheat at mills.
The vice-president (Mr A. L. Mulholland, Darfield) said the topic was a hardy annual. “Anyone who takes wheat direct from the header to the mill must expect this sort of thing,” he said. “It only strengthens the argument for farm storage.” Mr Dunshea agreed with Mr Mulholland. Anyone harvesting in bulk had to consider storage in bulk, he said. Mr K. Boyle, who moved the remit, disagreed in some respects. A small farmer, or a sheep farmer who grew wheat only occasionally, did not want to have to go to the expense of bulk storage. It seemed to him that the mills were taking wheat slower than when it was bagged.
