NO REPLY SURPRISES AT AUCKLAND

(New tealand Preet Association) AUCKLAND. No Reply, the rank outsider in the nine-horse field, won a desperate finish in the May Handicap, the feature race and first leg of the TA.B. double on the first night of the Auckland Trotting Club’s winter meeting at Alexandra Park on Saturday.

Always handy, No Reply scored by a head from the well-backed southern mare, Disband. Great Adios was a nose back third and Gipsy Hanover, after making all the pace, fought on gallantly for a close fourth. No Reply paid £3B 19s for a win. On the double with Our Luck, which in a bracket with Our Eileen was a hot favourite, he returned £ll9 2s for £l. The weather was fine and the track fast Herby Tryax and Oakhampton tangled at the start of the May Handicap. Gipsy Hanover led out from Mister Chips, No Reply, Swartz Pete, Great Adios, and Bobbinet. There was a gap of three lengths to Disband, which was well clear of Oakhampton and Herby Tryax. Gipsy Hanover set a leisurely pace as she showed the way past the mile pole from Mister Chips (outside) and No Reply. Swartz Pete was next, on the outside of Great Adios, and then came Bobbinet, Disband. Oakhampton and Herby Tryax. The field had bunched. Retained Command Gipsy Hanover retained command starting the last round, but Mister Chips was first into line for the run to the judge. Gipsy Hanover and No Reply were close, followed by Great Adios, Disband, and Herby T 7na great finish, No Reply just won from Disband. Great Adios was a close third, a neck in front of Gipsy Hanover. Mister Chips weakened to fifth, followed by Herby Tryax, Bobbinet, Oakhampton, and Swartz Pete. The field in the Huia Handi-

cap began perfectly. After a furlong, Paying Guest was in command from Cover On, Rose Craft, Fair Song, Forward March, Anne Bingen, Our Lucky, and Control. Paying Guest led past the mile from Rose Craft, Cover On, Ann Bingen, Fair Song, Forward March, Scotty Dillon and Our Luck. Shortly afterwards Our Luck made a big run which carried her into the lead with a round to go. Our Luck was running smoothly along the back and was well clear rounding the home turn. She won easily from Flying Maiden, which had half a length on Paying Guest. Four lengths back Our Eileen ran on gamely for fourth, followed by Fair Song, Cover On, Light Oak, Forward March, Scotleigh, Scotty Dillon, Dark Lorene, Anne Bingen, Rose Craft and Astrallght. Control was last. Fined £2O J. Butcher, the driver of Caledonian Scott, was fined £2O after the Whenuapai Handicap for causing interference to Rocky Star half a furlong from the finish. The connexions of Caledonian Scott were warned about the horse’s tendency to hang. N. J. Taylor, the owner-driver of Brilliant Brigade, was fined £lO for giving incorrect information on his nomination form for the Parakal Stakes. The horse was shown on the form as a three-year-old, which resulted in his being incorrectly placed on the limit in the original handicap for the event. The connexions of Loyal Knight and Wee Don were warned after the running of the Parakal Stakes that the barrier manners of their horses must improve. Loyal Knight swung around at the start of the first division, checking Amend and Lightning Star. Gloaming Girl also suffered Interference and Loyal

Knight’s driver, E. D. Wallis, was thrown from his sulky. Wee Don swung sideways at the start of the second division. Results: RANUI HANDICAP, £700; 2:16 class; mobile start; 2m.— 6/6 ULOVE (13) J.
