Captain Rebel Takes Waikato Hurdles

"The Press’* Special Service AUCKLAND. Betters lost heavily on the two Riverton visitors, Koral and Macdonald, on the second day of the Waikato winter meeting at Te Rapa on Saturday. Each finished fourth, Koral in the Vercoe Steeplechase and Macdonald in the Waikato Hurdles.

Between them they carried £6449 10s in bets. Once he lost three or four lengths with a hopelessly slow start, Macdonald had an impossible assignment to match such a fast galloper and accomplished jumper as Captain Rebel. For the second successive year Captain Rebel was a decisive winner. Macdonald was four lengths away, with Confer and Robert Earl between.

Captain Rebel carried 9-10 in the Waikato Hurdles last year and won by 10 lengths in 3min 44 2-ssec. This time his weight was 10-5, the winning margin a length and a quarter and the winning gallop 3min 37 4-ssec. At seven years old he showed none of the same keenness to bolt into a big lead and for the last three furlongs his rider, P. R. Wilson, was compelled to urge him hard. Better Than Expected Confer ran better than expected and well enough to suggest that he might become very useful this winter. It is when the going is heavy that he races best.

Considering the ground he lost at the start and his absence from racing over hurdles since last August, Macdonald ran with credit. He made a move from the half-mile which had him fourth into the run home and he looked a chance for third until the last fence.

His last jump was ill-judged and he fell away again on landing. The trainer-rider of Macdonald and Koral, W. J. Hillis, said both horses jumped patchily. He hoped they improved with their racing. Both will compete again next Saturday, Koral in the Waikato Steeplechase and Macdonald in the Seddon Hurdles. After being hampered at the first fence Koral tailed the field for the Vercoe Steeplechase over the first mile, except for King Ora. With a mile to go he was closer to the front, although only fifth of eight. Near the three furlongs, when trailing Hoss, Count Lin and Paemoko, he looked a good chance but be jumped the next fence badly and was not dangerous in the run home. The T.A.B. double was won by Roganne in the Founders' Plate and Wiri in the Stewards’ Handicap. The pair paid £35 19s for £l. The weather was fine and the track in good order. There was a good attendance. Three Suspended Three riders were suspended by the judicial committee. A. Cowan, the rider of Suraml in the Melville Steeples was suspended up to and including May 21 for causing interference to Delwood. Suraml, which finished third, was relegated to fourth and Delwood promoted to third. A. E. Ford, the rider of Sunny Fllou in the Otorohanga Handicap was suspended up to and Including June 4. Sunny Fllou crossed in front of Lady Vol!time (A. Colven) half a furlong from the post and caused Lady Volitime to fall. G. M. Carson, the rider of Skyrocket in the Maiden Mile, was suspended up to and including July 9. His horse shifted ground just short of the post and caused Fair Quota (C. Barker) to fall. Fair Quota brought down Achates (G. F. Hughes) and Gabonette (D. W. Blake). Barker was sent to hospital with a broken collar bone and bruising. Hughes went to hospital for observation, but was cleared and returned to the course to ride in the seventh race. Results: MELVILLE STEEPLECHASE, £800: 2jm.—4/4 EXPLICIT (12) 9-0 R. J.
