MEN’S BASKETBALL Good Match By School Old Boys

The youthful High School Old Boys team turned on another well-drilled performance to beat the depleted University B side, in the sixth round of the A grade men’s basketball competition on Saturday.

It was an entertaining match and although there was a 10-point margin, 45-35, at the finish, there was little between the teams. High School Old Boys had much to be thankful for in the form of its Canterbury representative centre, A. Hounsell, who scored 23 points with ,a display of splendid shooting. Before the round, University B was lying second in the competition, equal with its A side. It now shares third position with Old Boys. The University A side was also without a number of regular players because of the university holidays, but managed to hold off a strong challenge from Rex to win, 45-33,

and retain its position on the ladder. Y.M.C.A. gave a convincing performance against Y-Boys, winning by the overwhelming margin of 64 points to 8, the highest total scored against any team this season. Points: Y.M.C.A. 10, University A 8, High School Old Boys 6, University B 6, Burnham 4, Rex 2, Y-Boys 0. Hounsell On Form HIGH SCHOOL OLD BOYS 45: A Hounsell 23, G. Orchard 8. S. Hunt 7, M. Gleason 4, R. Milligan 2, K. Milligan 1. UNIVERSITY B 35: W. E. Smith ' 17. J. Riley 8, Ming 6, C. R. Morris 4. Both sides had their moments but it was undoubtedly the shooting ability of Hounsell in the centre which tipped the scales in favour of old Boys. Early In the game he demonstrated that he had his eye in and so the rest of the team fed him the ball at every opportunity. W. E. Smith found himself in much the same position for University. At times his offensive play was brilliant. Unfortunately, he did not have quite the same support from his players as Hounsell and had to work much harder for hts 17 points. University B made a slow start and for a time a crushing defeat appeared Imminent. Old Boys had 10 points on the board before the students opened their scoring with a single foul shot. This inspired the team to greater effort and with 4min to go in the first spell, Smith sank a lay-up to even the score at 13-ail.

From then the struggle was on. At half-time Old Boys had a narrow 19-17 lead, and the scores were level on four occasions. With only Bmtn to go, they were level at 29-all, but for the last time. Old Boys finally edged slowly ahead. Old Boys control of the ball was excellent in the closing minutes and they never relaxed their defence. S. Hunt continued his improvement for Old Boys, balancing his play well. G. Orchard showed ability on offence, although there were obvious flaws In his defence. The University player, J. Riley, also showed improving form. Chris Morris, brother of the New Zealand trialist, Colin Morris, made his first appearance in the team and moved well. Depleted Team UNIVERSITY A 45: K. Williams 12, J. Stead 11, M. Askew 8, T. Morris 8, J. Croeott 6. REX 33: D. Verey 10, P. Ward 8, J. McEvoy 8, N. Saunders 4, M. Allison 3, V. Foster 2. Rex provided University A with some unexpectedly strong opposition. It never seemed likely to win the match, but to score 33 points against a team In the running for the Interclub title was no mean effort. At half-time, University A led, 21-13. There were, nevertheless, extenuating circumstances. University A only had two of its regular players on the court, J. Stead and M. Askew, and although the lower-grade replacements played well, the side was well below full strength. Stead played another excellent game, rebounding well. Askew was also prominent. But It was the former Nelson representative, K. E. Williams, who made the best Impression. He worked hard on defence and was rewarded with the top score of the match for his efforts on attack. D. Verey scored 18 useful points for Rex. P. Ward and N. Saunders again provided the strength In their side’s defensive pattern. Disappointing End Y.M.C.A. M: B. Entwistle 18, C. Walton 10, M. Busch 8. D. Rattray 8, A. Riley 8, P. Ross 8, J. Burn 6. Y-BOYS I: N. Vincent 4, B. Skinner 2, K. Ewings 2. The meeting of the top and bottom teams in the competition was not one of the brightest games of the afternoon. In the first spell, Y-Boys showed lack of shooting ability but did well to keep Y.M.C.A. down to 20 points. It was a different story In the second spell. Lack of fitness and Inability to mark a man effectively proved disastrous for Y-Boys, allowing Y.M.C.A. to reach its chosen goal of 60 points. In the closing minutes, Y-Boys could only offer a token defence and more often than not It was left to one man to face the might of three opposing players. This was a disappointing end after a reasonably promising start. Other results:— Senior Reserve.—Christchurch B.H.S. 41. Y.M.C.A. B 19: Wigram 38, Rex B 20. C Grade.—Toe H A 29, Hagley A 20; Deaf Boys A 45, N.A.C. 27; Y-Boys C 24, Burnsco B 15. Decimal currency will be introduced tn New Zealand in July, 1967.
