Record Day At Hastings

,( The Press’* Special Service HASTINGS. Palisade, D a 1 v u i, Wavering and the betting public were the stars in a record day of exciting racing at Hastings on Saturday when the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s Centennial Cup meeting ended. Palisade beat Sobig in the weight-for-age Ormond Gold Cup, Dalvui and Wavering both set new track records when they won the Dewar Gold Cup and the Dewar Eleven Hundred respectively, and the public wagered the record sum on-course for a day of £85,018. Dalvui, whoso win in the Dewar Gold Cup was thoroughly deserved after his- fast-run victory in the Fellding Cup and a bold fourth in the Hawke’s Bay Centennial Cup, ran the 11 furlongs in 2min 14 4-ssec, •clipping a full second from Tasman Lad’s previous best for the track of 2min 15 4-ssec. W. D. Skelton, who rode Dalvui, had the four-year-old handy to the lead all the way. He turned for home third behind Udare and Isfahan. Then, as Isfahan faded, he ranged up to Udare. For a time it seemed Dalvui might not get up, but gradually he got the upper hand and won by a long neck. One race earlier Skelton had been successful on the two-year-old, Modern Lad, in the Juvenile Handicap. But after touching this high spot in midafternoon his luck changed and he was fined £lO after' his

I mount, Sail Away, had checked Sobig early in the Ormond Gold Cup, and another £2O after Gold Fort interfered with To Vince five furlongs from home in the Okawa Hack Handicap. CUP CLASH The huge crowd was thrilled by the Ormond Gold Cup elakh between Palisade and Sobig; and spice was added to the contest when Sail Away participated in a three horse tussle for most of the way along the straight. He finished only a nose from Sobig. which had been beaten by half a length by Palisade. Palisade's winning time of 2min 5 3-ssee was one of the best on record for the Ormond Gold Cup. The crowd gave Palisade and B. J. Skelton a tremendous ovation when they returned to scale. Skelton Mid afterwards that he was a little worried about the furlong when Sobig refused to give in. He could not hit Palisade with the whip because the horse resented it. Urging with hands and heels for a few strides, however, was enough to shake the champion and he mastered Sobig then. Wavering's victory in the seven-furlong Dewar Eleven Hundred was outstanding. The apprentice. T. Whittington, had Wavering much handler in the running than usual. She trailed Sir Juvante and Serena to the home turn, and then shot away to win by three lengths and a quarter in Imin 13 l-ssec. Kesults:— J. Dombroski 1: 8/7 HAHIPUCloud, Shahrua. Two lengths, head.
