Late Scratching; Rider Fined For Negligence

INVERCARGILL.
Eiffel Tower was a surprise late scratching for the Southern Hurdles at the opening of the Southland Racing Club’s autumn meeting at Invercargill on Saturday.
Eiffel Tower had been saddled up and his rider, W. J. Hillis, had weighed out when it was announced that Eiffel Tower had been withdrawn. He was bracketed with Istan Light, which took his place in the field and won the event. Istan Light had not shown any form in his two previous starts as a hurdler, a role in which Eiffel Tower was to have his first start. The bracket was backed down to 9s 6d for £1 for a place and less than £1 10s for £1 on the win machine at one stage. An official release on the incident said that after weighing out for the event, Hillis, who is also the trainer of Eiffel Tower, reported to the owner, Mr W. E. Hazlett, that
there was a slight filling in the horse’s front leg. As no veterinary surgeon was available at the time, Mr Hazlett instructed Hillis to scratch Eiffel Tower if there was any doubt about his soundness. The judicial committee considered that there was negligence on Hillis's part and he was fined £5 for the late scratching. The double at the meeting was won by Tundra and Turtle, the pair paying £2113s for £l. Results: SOUTHERN HURDLES, £325: l»m.—l/1 ISTAH LIGHT (3) 9-0 W. C. Gye 1: 5/5 SIDE SADDLE (9) 9-0 S. D.
