Science Students To Confer

“Science Advancing” is the theme for the New Zealand science students’ conference to be held at the University of Canterbury at 11am from May 14 to 21. It will be officially opened by the Minister of Science (Mr Taiboys). More than 120 students from all parts of New Zealand will attend and hear papers on new beliefs in all branches of science. One student will come from Australia and two from Canada. At a public meeting in the university hall on the Wednesday, Dr. R. S. Bigelow (reader in zoology in Canterbury) will speak on eugenics and the theory that the human race is “breeding itself out.”

The chief guest will be Professor A. J. Marshall, of Monash University, Melbourne, who will speak of the responsibilities of the universities in advancing science. Dr. R. A. M. Gregson, reader in psychology in Canterbury, will speak on taste research: Mr G. A. M. King of the Geophysical Observatory, on ionosphere research; Professor L. Kay (electrical,

Canterbury) will describe his world-famous work on sensing equipment for the blind; Dr. Peter Meredith will talk about the Wheat Research Institute: Dr. A. W. Lily, an Auckland university gynaecologist, will speak on the life and activity of the foetus; and Mr G. M. Carpenter, of Wellington, will postulate the claim that astrology is now a science. A symposium by Canterbury students who have done research in Antarctica will be led by Dr. B. Stonehouse, reader in zoology. Another on “university teaching and you” will be led by Professor A. Crowther, Professor D. F. Lawden, Dr. W. Metcalf, and Dr. Vivienne Benzie. Visitors will spend a full day inspecting activities at Lincoln College. Scientific firms will have displays at the university.
