Positive Rugby Erases Disappointing Memories
If the other 11 clubs in the senior competition even get near the standard set by Old Boys, University A and Christchurch in their matches on Saturday, club Rugby followers can expect some fine entertainment this season. The three teams produced some brilliant back play and their positive attitude that backs have an important place in Rugby erased some of the memories of the disappointing play in the first round.
Old Boys beat University A, 20-9—their first win over University since 1958—in a bright match which provided excellent Rugby for the meagre but appreciative crowd. At Rugby Park, Christchurch played all sorts of Rugby tricks with its backs to beat Lincoln College, 32-13.
After two rounds five teams—Old Boys, Christchurch. Linwood, Suburbs and University B—are unbeaten. At the other end of the scale there are five teams (one of them, surprisingly, University A) which have lost both matches. Linwood had a hard struggle against MerivalePapanui before winning, 1011, ll, but otherwise most matches took their predicted course. Results:— Old Boys 20, University A 9.
Christchurch 32, Lincoln College 11. New Brighton 18, Albion 3. Suburbs 13, Sydenham 3. University B 17, Belfast 11. Shirley 16, Marist 6. Linwood 15, MerivalePapanui 11. Championship points are:— Christchurch, Old Boys, Suburbs, Linwood, University B 2, Shirley, New Brighton, Albion, Lincoln College 1; University A, Merivale-Papanui, Belfast, Marist, Sydenham 0.
