40 In Hospital After Drawn Cup Final
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copg right) GLASGOW. More than 40 people were taken to hospital after fights between Celtic and Rangers soccer fans at the Scottish Cup final at Glasgow on Saturday. Most of the injured had head injuries after being struck by flying bottles. One had a serious stab wound. Three of the 127,000 spectators collapsed and died during the game, which ended in a goalless draw. Police arrested six men. Rangers almost snatched victory with 13 minutes to go when its inside left W. Johnston, was presented with a perfect opening while Celtic’s goalkeeper, Simpson, was stranded on the edge of the penalty area. But he failed to connect with the ball. The game had all the best ingredients of a cup final, except goals—plenty of skilful football, tension and excitement. Both teams have won the trophy 18 times.
