Weeping Elms

Sir, —In reply to “Plant a Smaller Tree,” the owner of the elm planted smaller trees as well! On acquiring the property a few years ago, this person lined our north boundary with native trees until the place is as treeguarded as a nudist camp. And in front of the sunny, sheltered corner behind our garage, where year after year we had grown basketsful of ripe, juicy tomatoes for the household, Buddleias were planted that grow 30 feet tall and render our tomato patch a kind of horticultural no-man’s-land. The Fencing Act? In New Zealand it seems that some people obey the law and others seem to be protected by what the TV advertisements are so fond of calling “an invisible shield.” Still, we are now optimistic of getting rid of both the elm and its little brothers. —Yours, etc, RATEPAYER.
