The Cinema

Sir, —“Penrushed” is probably right in assuming that Phyllis Newell does not appreciate “Good family entertainment” Neither do I. Like so many other types of film, though “musicals” may have a fairly general appeal, they are graded to suit a ten-year-old mentality. Yet as

cinemas must above everything be made to pay, my experience of local cinematic tastes do not encourage the belief that the small output of thought-provoking films produced each year would justify the expense of showing them here. At least three in the last few years (two of them starring Sir Laurence Olivier) have lasted one week in city cinemas. The proprietors know that they can play safe with “00-la-la” naughty comedies, eternal-triangle dramas, and killingly funny knock-about farces, and one can’t really blame them for producing all three ad nauseum.—Yours, etc., I.S.T.
