TRAINING SQUAD
Smith Not Available One of the finest players Canterbury has produced in recent years, W. E. Smith (University B), has again decided not to make himself available for the Canterbury men’s basketball representative squad this season. Smith, a member of the small group which scored more than 200 points in the A grade inter-club competition last season, was unavailable last season because of business commitments, but felt that he might have time to continue in first-class competition this year. smith has piayed better than ever this year and on Saturday scored 21 of the 30 points netted _t>y University B against Y.M.C.A. Two other players of considerable promise, J. Stead and P. Stigley, notified the chief eoaehselector (Mr N. Saunders) that they would not be available. This has provided Mm with a considerable problem, one he shares with the Canterbury B selector. Mr B. Milligan. Because of the scarcity of promising material, the two selectors have had to Emit their inlttal joint training squad, from wMeh the A and B representative team* will coms, te onCy 12 players. Mr Saunders said, after announcing the squad on Saturday, that there would be several addition* te the squad, probably between five and 10 players. ’ The combined squad for the A and B teams tan—M.
