1966 ROAD DEATHS
Warning On Complacency “.Although the figure* for this year’s road deaths are veil down we can't afford to become complacent—espedally during long week-ends,” the superintendent of traffic for the New Zealand Transport Department, (Mr D. F. Ross,) said in Wellington. “It is no coincidence that the lower death rate follows reports of better driving by motorists this year. The better the driving the less accidents we have, and it is hoped the improvement will continue. New motorists must realise that the car is not a toy. In careless hands it is as lethal as any gun. “Drivers who speed, show off or display impatience in either following too closely or passing dangerously, are a menace to themselves, their passengers and all other road users. The most dangerous hazards are at cross-roads, and extreme care should be taken w hen entering or crossing another road. “Although the road toll so far this year is considerably lower than for the same period last year, we must remember that it is still higher than the previous year. Last year was a phenomenal one for accidents and we must take care that it does not happen again,” Mr Ross said.
