City Observance Of Anzac Day

About 1700 former servicemen paraded for the Anzac Day dawn parade in Cathedral square yesterday, but only a comparative handful of citizens attended the laying of wreaths and commemoration service at 11 a.m. A cold, grey morning in Christchurch probably kept many away from the mid-morning service at the King Edward Barracks, where the seating provided was not nearly filled.

Yesterday’s fiftyfirst Anzac Day may have been the last of its kind, with a possible liberalisation of its commemoration in an expected Anzac Day Amendment Act this session of Parliament.

But Mr C. V. Gallagher, headmaster of the Shirley Boys’ High School, made a spirited defence of the traditional Anzac Day in his address at the citizens’ commemoration service. He criticised those

who regarded it as a day for personal pleasure or recreation. “Let us do everything we can to strengthen and preserve Anzac Day as the glorious day of our nation,” Mr Gallagher said.
